The populist right is rising, and Labour needs an answer which is not mealy-mouthed managerialism. It needs a cohesive vision based on a firm understanding of purpose, direction and identity. To do that it needs to move beyond the foundations provided by the postwar consensus — whose assumptions have been found lacking, and outputs are increasingly dispised by voters.

'What Labour Is For' supplies the missing foundation: a single framework, grounded in the moral instincts that decide what people accept as legitimate, running from solidarity and the nation through welfare, housing, defence and AI. It is a route out of managerialism and a way to beat the populist right on the ground it has claimed — not with a three-point plan, but with a serious account of what Britain is for.
